*Note: There are always exceptions! If you have any questions or concerns, contact the escape room business directly.

1. Myth: Escape rooms are scary and dangerous.

Many escape rooms are not scary, but some might be a little scary. Most are not dangerous and there are safety standards that owners must follow. Customers can read about room themes online and see if the room is horror-themed. This way, whether you want to make sure you are getting a scare or if you want to avoid a room that might frighten you, you can see what you’re getting into.

2. Myth: Escape rooms are too difficult and require certain knowledge.

Most escape rooms don’t require the player to know a lot about the subject/theme of the room. If you’re in a laboratory escape room, you usually don’t need to know anything about science or chemistry. In most escape rooms, the theming and story are there to immerse you, and not to test your knowledge. A well designed room has puzzles that are challenging, but not frustrating. Also, reputable escape rooms have people test room puzzles, so that they know if they need to adjust anything that is too hard or too easy.

3. Myth: Escape rooms are only for certain groupings of people.

Some think escape rooms are only for families. Some think they’re just for couples. Many think they’re only for large groups. A few think they’re mostly for corporate team building. The fact is, that most escape rooms are built for a variety of groups to enjoy. Escape room owners typically want to provide a fun, interactive experience for the people in their community and those visiting the area. Many escape room businesses will have information online about team building, age recommendations, and capacity of rooms.

4. Myth: Escape rooms are claustrophobic and they lock you in a room and chain/handcuff you to things.

This is usually not the case. There used to be quite a few establishments that locked you in the room, but increasingly these places are being asked by fire marshals to have a safe way to exit rooms in case of emergency. So, even if it seems that you’re locked in, you might not actually be locked in. In a few escape rooms a person may be handcuffed or chained to something in the room for a certain amount of time. This is not the norm though. Whether you like the idea of being confined in small locked spaces or you have concerns about claustrophobia and personal safety, you can always ask about these things ahead of time, to ensure a safe and fun experience.

5. Myth: Escape rooms are physically rigorous and require you to be physically fit.

While there are some rooms that have physical challenges, many do not. Some rooms that have crawling or other physical elements, are designed so that only one person has to do the physical task and the others can avoid it. The tasks in many rooms don’t require any strength or physicality. Often, puzzles can be solved by just thinking, touching, and moving objects.

6. Myth: Escape rooms leave you in one room for the whole hour.

This may have been the norm years ago, but now many escape rooms have more than one room or chamber. Most likely, you’ll work your way through at least two rooms during your hour long adventure.
